“People tend to forget that Provence has an incredible Roman history and some of the best-kept Roman monuments in the world,” Haslett says. They’re all clustered in the west, around towns like Arles, Nîmes, and Orange. Settle in Les Alpilles, an area of picturesque communes that surround the eponymous mountain range. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is its crown jewel, and less than an hour’s drive from the ancient sites.
